How You’ll Know It’s Time To Replace A Furnace

The weather is cooling down and if you want to stay warm, you’ll want a functioning furnace that can get you through the winter. HVAC systems are complicated, and it may not be worth your time to research everything there is to know about them. Instead, look for these warning signs that your furnace isn’t working to its fullest ability so you can get things sorted out with an HVAC specialist before the snow hits.

Is your furnace old?

If you’ve had conversations with your HVAC specialist before about your furnace, you probably already know how much longer it will last. However, if you haven’t gotten around to hiring one, the general rule of thumb is to be prepared to replace your furnace after 15 years. Some systems can last up to 20 years depending on how well it was maintained, but getting it replaced after 15 years is a healthy practice. If your furnace is beyond 15 years old, you are most likely not getting the most out of it and are paying higher heating bills as a result.

If your furnace is over 15 years old and you’re having some of the issues below, it’s most likely time to replace your filter. However, don’t hesitate to call an HVAC specialist to confirm this with you.

Is your furnace noisy?

If your furnace is unusually noisy, it may be time to replace it. Most HVAC systems can make a whole variety of sounds depending on the issue at hand, but unusual clanking, popping, or rattling could be signs that it’s time to commit to purchasing a new furnace.

Is your furnace less efficient?

How can you tell if a furnace is operating less efficiently than it used to? First of all, you’ll want to pay attention to your heating bill. It’s perfectly natural for your heating costs to rise as your furnace gets older, but it will come to a point where it’s more worth it to invest in a new furnace rather than continue using the one you currently have, even in its working condition. The same goes for repairs. If you’ve spent 30-50 percent of the cost of the furnace repairing it, there’s no longer value in repairing it any longer when you could instead be saving for a new one.

Another thing to look for is if your furnace is heating each room evenly. If your furnace is on and each room of the house has a drastically different temperature, it may be time to make the switch.

Is there dirt around the registers?

If your furnace is exhibiting signs of leaking air or dust particles, you should call an HVAC professional immediately. This can be a sign that your furnace has too high of a CO rating, making it a health risk to anyone living there, especially anyone with asthma or difficulty breathing. If your furnace is less than 15 years old, you may need to replace your filter.
