Staying Cool & Comfortable In Color, Summer 2020

woman with fan

Hello again, Coloradoans! We hope you’re staying happy, healthy, and safe during these difficult times. Today, Buckhorn Heating & Air Conditioning is back with a simple but important reminder for our clients and readers this summer season — make sure your air conditioning system is not just in working order, but also optimized and ultra effective!

In Colorado, we get beautiful, sunny summers that are a joy to experience. While this weather makes it a dream to be outside, it can make our homes exceedingly uncomfortable if we don’t have air conditioning, or if our AC is in need of repair or general maintenance.

Fortunately, we’re going to cover some things you can do to beat the heat and enjoy summer 2020 in your home!

Check Your Filter(s)

No matter if you have central air or window units to cool your most-used rooms, give the filters a check! Depending on your system, you may be able to simply clean the filter before moving on, or you may need to purchase and install a replacement. Believe it or not, this is the most-common reason why people’s air conditioners are less effective than usual.

Clean The Unit’s Coils And Fins

Like the AC filter, the unit’s coils and fins can become dirty, hindering the overall performance of your cooling system. To clean the coils, wash them with a hose or commercial cleaner when the unit is off. And for your fins, grab a soft-bristle brush to remove buildup — you can even buy specialized fin-cleaning tools!

Inspect Your Unit

If you have a good understanding of your AC unit and its components, you can inspect the ductwork, outdoor units, and condensation lines to determine if they need cleaned, repaired, or even replaced.

Update Your Unit

And finally, sometimes you need an update. On a simple level, an upgrade to your thermostat can actually improve your unit’s performance, lower your energy bills, and make it easier to manage the heating and cooling of your home. And in the worst case, you may need to replace your unit or system to ensure optimal performance. Most AC systems have a lifespan between 10 and 15 years, so if you’re unit is older, consider upgrading!
